Question Posed to The Noble Scholar Shaykh Muhammad Bin Hādi حفظه الله:
Q. Do bad manners scar/blemish the Salafiyyah of a man?
A. As for the angle of his creed, then no. He remains A Sunnī. However, there's no doubt (thats his Salafiyyah is scarred/blemished) from the angle of him remaining one who is deficient in faith, there's no doubt about this. That's because:
The one who commits Zinā is not a believer at the time he commits Zinā. And the one who consumes intoxicants is not a believer at the time he consumes intoxicants. And the one who steals is not a believer at the time he steals.
This is the Hadīth. The intent, he doesn't exit from the creed of Ahlis-Sunnah by this (bad behavior), the (description of him being upon the) creed of Ahlis-Sunnah does cease to be for him. However, he remains as one who is deficient in faith. This is the meaning of our statement that he remains a Sunnī in his creed. The meaning is not that he is complete in faith. No, Rather he is one who is deficient in faith. However the intent is that these (inappropriate) behaviors and practical mistakes do not remove him from the (realm of the) Sunnah. Meaning, it's not like the innovation of creed.
Yes, his faith is deficient. Yes (it is). And these are the ones whom our Salaf As-Sālih said concerning them (and referred to them as),
“The criminals of Ahlis-Sunnah.”
They did not remove them from the (realm of the) Sunnah, also (at the same time) they did not give them the (status of having) complete religious integrity.
