Question: As-salaamu 'alaykum virtuous Shaykh, Shaykh Usāmah Al-‘Utaybē, may Allah preserve you from every evil and bless you. I have a question. Is there something in the Sunnah for disciplining a teenager other than the legislative limit of striking to a maximum of ten times?
Answer: Wa alaykumus-salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu.
The Prophet ﷺ prohibited striking (anyone who needs to be disciplined) more than ten times except in the case of the legislative punishments prescribed by Allah. However, this is only to be done by those who have the proper authority to do so. Furthermore, disciplining is not conditional and a must (to correct behavior); however, it is permissible to utilize it when there is a need (and benefit in doing so). Be careful not to discipline your child (in a manner that may) eventually end up in you going to prison!
Question: Sorry, may Allah bless you Shaykh. Is this manner of disciplining applicable to a teenager? If so, until what age?
Answer: It isn't restricted to a specific age and is not specific for a father with his children. Even the amir/sultan (i.e. president, king, state authority etc,) can discipline those in need of discipline in an Islamic country).
Overall and more importantly, (when it comes to discipline, the determining factor and) the ability to obtain the intended (result of correcting ill behavior must be sought), and one must be certain that it does not result in greater harm.
Questioner: May Allah bless you. I ask Allah that He makes it weigh heavy on your scalen (of good deeds).
