The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Sniff water deep into your nose (i.e. during ablution) except if you’re fasting.”
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymīn, rahimahullah, said:
This is a proof and evidence that the person who is fasting should not exaggerate when putting water into his nose and mouth (during ablution). Because this will cause the water to go inside of his stomach, and thus invalidate his fast.
But for example, if a person sniffed water deep into his nose and water went into his stomach, without intending to do that, this does not break the fast.
And this is because one of the conditions for breaking the fast is that a person (must) intend by his action to break his fast.
