The People Of The Sunnah Don’t Wait Until Things Become Popular To Take A Stand
By Abu ‘Abdis Salaam Siddiq Al Juyaanee
The people of the Sunnah have been guided by the grace of Allah to cling to the pure teaching of Islam. This adherence provides them protection from misguidance and its people. In being truthful to the Muslims and focusing on their best interest they do not hesitate to criticize and refute the people of misguidance, even during times where such criticism and warnings are unpopular. This is because they know that misguidance does not move nor propagate on its own accord. On the contrary, it is carried and spread like an infectious disease by those afflicted and suffering from its destructive and deadly symptoms. Thus, just like those infected with deadly and highly contagious pathogens are quarantined, likewise the people of Sunnah avoid and distance themselves from the people of innovation. Similarly, just like deadly diseases are cautioned from, likewise, the people of the Sunnah warn against innovation and misguidance.
Based on the pure teachings of Islam the people of the Sunnah are able to identify problematic personalities even before their reality becomes known to the masses. An example of this, is the warning issued by the noble and great scholar, Shaikh ‘Abdul ‘Azeez Bin Bāz (rahimahullah) in 1996 against Usāmah Bin Laden. Again, in 1996 Shaikh Bin Bāz warned against Usāmah Bin Laden. Years before September 11 Shaikh Bin Bāz said,
“Verily, Usāmah Bin Laden is from those who spread corruption upon the Earth. He strives in the ways of evil and corruption as well as revolts against the rulers.”
[Excerpt From The Muslim And Middle East Newspaper, Issue Date: 9/22/1996]
Let me remind the reader that Shaikh Bin Bāz passed away in 1999; so he was influenced in no way by the events of 9/11. During my studies in North Africa and the Middle East, my scholars taught me that Usāmah Bin Laden is the personification of the teachings of Sayyid Qutb. This is undoubtedly a most blameworthy and evil description. The teachings of Sayyid Qutb are evil and corrupt. They are the teachings of the Khawārij who the Prophet (ﷺ) called, “The dogs of the Hellfire.” Ibn Abi Awfa reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said,
“The khawarij are the dogs of the Hellfire.”
[Collected In The Sunan Ibn Mājah And Graded Sahih (Authentic) By Al-Albani]
Any teaching that is steeped in the way of the dogs of the Fire can only be politely described as evil. So what you surmise would be the proper opinion about an individual who embodies these teachings? So in 1996, Shaikh Bin Bāz didn’t hesitate to warn against Bin Laden. The people of the Sunnah don’t wait until things become popular to take a stand.
