Introduction to Tawheed

Q: What is Tawheed?

A: Tawheed is the concept of monotheism in Islaam. It refers to the oneness and uniqueness of Allah. Tawheed is the foundation of Islamic belief and is divided into three categories:

  1. Tawheed ar Ruboobiyah (Belief in the Oneness of Allah)

2. Tawheed al-Asma wa Sifaat (Oneness of Allah's Names and Attributes)

3. Tawheed al Uloohiyah (Oneness of worship of Allah)

Understanding these categories is essential for every Muslim to develop a correct belief in Allah.

Q: What is Tawheed ar-Ruboobiyyah?

A: Tawheed ar-Ruboobiyyah refers to the belief in the oneness of Allah's Lordship. It involves recognizing Allah as the sole Creator, Sustainer, and Ruler of everything that exists. This belief is foundational in Islam, as it acknowledges Allah’s supreme authority and control over the universe.

  1. Allah is the only Creator of the heavens, earth, and everything within them.

2. Allah provides sustenance and resources to all His creation.

3. Allah controls the universe and everything that happens within it. He is the giver of life and death.

Q: What is Tawheed al-Uloohiyah?

A: Tawheed al-Uloohiyah-  focuses on the worship of Allah. To believe that there is nothing worthy of worship in truth except Allah. No acts of worship should be directed to anyone or anything other than Allah.  It recognizing Allah as the sole deity and rejecting all forms of idolatry and polytheism.

Examples of Worship includes but is not restricted to:

  • Salaat (prayers)

  • Du’ah (supplications)

  • Sacrificing for Allah

  • And other acts of worship

Staying away from Shirk (associating partners with Allah) -which is a major sin in Islaam- is essential to establish Tawheed al-Uloohiyah. Shirk is the opposite of Tawheed al-Uloohiyah.

Disbelief in worshipping other than Allah is essential. This includes but is not limited to: avoiding worshipping idols, statues, or any other deities. So no entity, whether human, jinn, object, or idea should be worshipped. All worship belongs to Allah and Allah alone!
