(Read the following excerpt carefully and answer the questions that follow.)
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ
"O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious).” [2:183]
This verse clarifies that fasting is a requirement for believers of this and previous nations. It is important to note that while fasting was mandated for those before, the specific observance of Ramadan is unique to the Ummah of Muhammad (ﷺ). There are six conditions that must be fulfilled in order for the fast to be correct and eligible to be accepted. These six conditions are as follows:
Islaam
Having sound a intellect
Having the intention (niyyah) the whole of the month
Reaching the age of distinction
Absence of the menses (which is specific to women)
Absence of post- partum blood (which is specific to women)
